Virtual Try-On at the Mirror: How It Really Works

Take a piece off the rack, scan the barcode – and see yourself wearing it in the mirror two seconds later, without changing. What sounds like the future runs today on a tablet and an off-the-shelf screen. This page explains the technology behind it – honestly, including its limits.

At a glance

  • Modern virtual try-on uses generative AI rendering – photorealistic instead of AR filter looks.
  • The customer stays dressed: only the reflection shows the new look, including fabric drape and colour variants.
  • In the store it acts as a pre-filter: only pieces that already convinced virtually get tried on for real.

How AI try-on works technically

  1. Capture: The tablet camera takes a picture of the customer – posture, proportions, and lighting are analysed.
  2. Understand: The AI recognises the selected garment from the collection: cut, material, drape, and colours.
  3. Render: A generative image model creates a new, photorealistic image: the same person, the same pose – in the new piece, with realistic drape and matching shadows.
  4. Vary: Changing colour, swapping pieces, or choosing the 3/4 side view takes just seconds each.

The entire process runs in the cloud; on site, a tablet and a screen are enough – which is why the try-on works on standard hardware (what it costs).

AI rendering vs. AR overlay: the crucial difference

Many 'try-on mirrors' work with AR overlays: the garment is placed over the camera feed as a live 3D model, like a social media filter. That's fast, but often looks pasted on – the piece 'floats' in front of the body and fabrics fall unnaturally.

What virtual try-on changes in the store

  • The barrier drops: Changing clothes takes effort – a glance in the mirror doesn't. More pieces get 'tried', more pieces delight.
  • The fitting room gets efficient: Only pieces that convinced virtually get tried on for real. Less frustration, shorter waits.
  • Bolder choices: The customer dares colours and cuts they'd never have picked off the rack – they've already seen themselves in them.
  • Fewer returns: Whoever has seen themselves realistically in a piece before buying brings it back less often – how boutiques reduce returns.

Honestly: the limits of the technology

Virtual try-on shows how a piece looks – not how it feels. Fit details like waistband width or sleeve length in a specific size are still checked by the real try-on. Very complex materials (sequins, transparent layers) are only approximated by the AI. That's exactly why we position it as a pre-filter and inspiration tool – the fitting room stays, it just gets used better.
