The Men's Dress Code Guide: From White Tie to Casual

01

Why dress codes give orientation

A dress code creates clarity – at business occasions, weddings, galas and elegant evening events. Today's greatest art is keeping the balance between tradition and contemporary ease: correct enough for the occasion, relaxed enough never to look costumed. Here are the key dress codes from most formal to most relaxed – plus the golden rules that apply to all of them.

02

White tie & black tie: the grand entrance

White tie (cravate blanche) is the most formal tier: state banquets and opera balls call for the black tailcoat with white piqué bow tie, white waistcoat, wing-collar shirt and black patent shoes with silk socks. Tradition detail: no wristwatch – at a gala, one doesn't measure time. Black tie means the tuxedo in black or midnight blue with silk lapels (shawl or peak), a self-tied black bow tie and a white dress shirt with French cuffs; patent shoes or highly polished plain-toe oxfords below. Black tie creative allows some play – a velvet dinner jacket in deep green or burgundy, for example.

03

Business formal: the dark suit

For board meetings, banking appointments, conservative industries and diplomatic occasions: a two- or three-piece suit in dark navy, charcoal or black – perfect fit is mandatory. Add a white or light-blue dress shirt, a classic silk tie and elegant oxfords or derbys in black or very dark brown. Precision counts here: sleeve and trouser length decide the entire impression.

04

Business casual & smart casual: the modern standard

Business casual is the new office standard: a well-fitting blazer with wool trousers, chinos or dark unwashed jeans; a shirt (happily without tie) or, in winter, a fine merino sweater or polo; loafers, monks, brogues or – in modern companies – minimalist leather sneakers. Smart casual is elevated leisure (after-work, restaurants, summer parties): a linen or oxford shirt or polo with chinos, flannel trousers or refined jeans, plus an unstructured blazer or quality overshirt and suede loafers, chelsea boots or well-kept sneakers. Casual finally means: groomed and uncomplicated – a fitting tee or knit, jeans or cargos, a leather or bomber jacket.

05

Weddings & summer: cocktail and summer elegant

Cocktail is sharp but less strict than black tie: a dark-blue or grey suit – in summer also light tones like sand or beige –, coloured or patterned tie and pocket square allowed. Summer elegant / garden party calls for light fabrics like linen, cotton or tropical wool in pastel and earth tones (beige, olive, light blue), with loafers worn sockless (or with no-shows). As a wedding guest, additionally: white stays off-limits, black only when the dress code explicitly asks for it.

06

The 5 golden style rules – and the honest check

One: match belt and shoes – leather colour and texture belong together. Two: fit beats brand – the most expensive suit fails with the wrong sleeve length. Three: the pocket square adds an elegant accent to a blazer but must never be cut from the same cloth as the tie. Four: shoe care – well-kept leather instantly upgrades any look. Five: when in doubt, slightly overdressed – a well-cut blazer and shirt always keep you safe.
