Suit or Smart Casual? The Dress Code Guide for Men
“Dress appropriately” – but what does that mean? Clear outfit formulas for every occasion, and how to test your impression before it counts.

01
The dress code ladder: from business formal to casual
Think of dress codes as a four-step ladder. Business formal: dark suit, light shirt, leather shoes – banks, law firms, big stages. Business casual: blazer, shirt without tie, wool trousers or dark chinos. Smart casual: the master discipline – quality knitwear or an overshirt, dark jeans or chinos, clean sneakers or boots. Casual: anything goes, but well-kept. The golden rule when in doubt: one step above what's expected – overdressing reads as respect, underdressing as indifference.
02
Smart casual done right: the 2-of-3 formula
Smart casual usually fails at one extreme: too stiff or too sloppy. The formula: of the three levels – top, trousers, shoes – at most two may be casual. Dark jeans and sneakers? Then a blazer or fine knit on top. Shirt and wool trousers? Then clean sneakers are allowed. Never all three levels relaxed – that's casual, not smart casual. Material beats branding: a merino sweater for 70 francs looks more premium than a logo tee for 200.

Occasion formulas: client meeting, date, wedding
Client meeting: mirror the client's industry plus one step – smart casual for the start-up, a blazer for the corporate. First date: smart casual with one piece that sparks conversation; more important than the outfit is that you can move in it. Wedding guest: a suit in mid-blue, grey or – at summer weddings – beige; black only when the dress code demands it, white never. And for every occasion: pressed creases, clean shoes and a well-sitting collar matter more than the price of the suit.
